New Zealand has the best Red Stag and Tahr hunting in the world. Exceptional trophies can be taken for all the species: Red Stag, Fallow, Wapiti, Ram, Goat, Sika, Tahr, Chamois. We travel to another area for Sika and to the South Island for Tahr and Chamois.

At Kanuka Wilderness we can offer you a 'hunt of a lifetime' experience in your quest for the ultimate trophy, the Red Stag. Our high country Wilderness area has a large percentage of bush cover interspersed with a multitude of clearings all of which make for ideal rifle, bow or muzzleloader hunting. We hunt by the spot and stalk method and all areas can be accessed by quad bike if necessary.

The annual hunting season extends for the duration of hard antler, March thru mid-August. Hunting is good for the entire period. The rut takes place during April. The South Island alpine trophies, Tahr and Chamois, are best hunted May thru July when they are rutting and in prime winter coat. New Zealand's seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. North Island - March high 81, low38. South Island - March high 77, low 26.

Trophy Quality

If hunting Red Stag, it will be the responsibility of the guide to judge the stag's score correctly and if a stag scores higher than estimated by the guide, the client will not be required to pay additional trophy fees.

Daily Rates

Hunters-$400 per day. Non-hunters-$150 per day. The daily rate covers the hunt costs of Airport pick-up and delivery, accommodation, meals and beverages, guiding and licenses.

Bird Shooting

During the season (usually runs the first weekend in May) we offer Mallard, Canadian Geese, Grey Duck, Black Swan and our own native Paradise Shell Duck.

Fishing

New Zealand is renowned as having the best trout fishing in the world. Catch brown and rainbow trout in any of six rivers within half an hour of Kanuka Wilderness.
